Why convert a PDF to grayscale
The most common reason is printing cost: color pages cost several times more than black-and-white at print shops, and color toner is the expensive cartridge at home and in the office. Converting the file itself — rather than trusting a printer's "print in grayscale" checkbox — guarantees consistent results and lets you see exactly what you will get before printing.
Grayscale also standardizes documents for formal submissions that require black-and-white, makes photocopies and rescans cleaner, and often reduces file size, since color image data compresses down substantially once the color channels are gone.
One caution: documents that rely on color to carry meaning — red-versus-green status charts, color-coded legal markups — should be checked page by page after conversion, since different colors of similar brightness can end up as similar grays. For everything else, the conversion is safe and instant.
