What each adjustment actually does
Brightness and contrast are the two most used and most confused. Brightness lifts or lowers every pixel by the same amount, which lightens an image but also flattens it — pushed hard, whites clip to pure white and detail in the highlights is gone for good. Contrast instead stretches the distance between light and dark, making shadows deeper and highlights brighter. Most photographs that look 'flat' need contrast rather than brightness; most that look 'dull' need a little of both.
Saturation controls how intense the colours are. A modest lift makes a grey-day photograph look like the scene you remember, while too much turns skin orange and skies electric — faces are the reliable warning sign, because we are extremely sensitive to skin tone and far less so to foliage or fabric. If an image needs a lot of saturation to come alive, the real problem is usually underexposure or low contrast.
Sharpness and blur work on edges rather than tones. Sharpening increases local contrast where light meets dark, which reads as crisper detail — but overdone it produces visible halos along edges and amplifies noise in flat areas like skies. Blur softens the same transitions, useful for obscuring a background or reducing the harshness of a noisy image. Neither can recover detail that was never captured: sharpening a genuinely out-of-focus photo makes it look worse, not better.
Order, restraint, and knowing when to stop
The order you apply adjustments in changes the result, because each one operates on the output of the last. A workable sequence is to fix exposure and contrast first so the tonal range is right, then adjust colour, then apply any stylistic treatment such as sepia or grayscale, and sharpen last of all. Sharpening early means every later adjustment amplifies the halos you just introduced.
Converting to grayscale is worth treating as a deliberate choice rather than a fallback. Black and white works when an image is carried by shape, texture, contrast, or expression, and it rescues photographs shot under mixed or ugly lighting where the colours were never going to agree with each other. It does not rescue a picture whose subject was the colour. Because grayscale removes a whole dimension of separation, images usually need a contrast lift afterwards to keep tones that were distinct in colour from merging into the same grey.
One practical caution: these edits are baked into the exported file. That is different from a photo editor that keeps adjustments as instructions you can revisit indefinitely. Always work from your original rather than from an already-filtered copy — each save of a JPG re-compresses it, and stacking edits across several rounds of export degrades the image in a way no filter can undo.
