Open it in your reading app and check that the pages look dark.
How the dark copy is made
The recommended way adds a white "difference" layer over each page. PDF viewers combine it with the page, so white becomes black, black becomes white and every colour turns into its opposite. The original text, links and pictures stay in the file, so you can still search and copy, and the file is barely bigger.
Some e-readers and very simple apps ignore that layer and show the page as normal. For those, choose "Pages as images": each page is redrawn as an inverted picture, which works everywhere, but the text can no longer be selected.
What to expect
Text and line drawings look great inverted. Photos turn into negatives, and highlighted text keeps its highlight in the opposite colour, so a yellow highlight becomes dark blue.
For long reading sessions, combine it with Crop PDF to trim wide margins, so the text fills more of a small screen.
