Why every placement wants a different shape
The dimensions are not arbitrary — they follow from how each surface is used. Feed images are viewed while scrolling on a phone held upright, so portrait and square formats occupy more of the screen and are favoured; 1:1 and 4:5 are the workhorses, with 4:5 the tallest most feeds will display without cropping. Stories and reels fill the entire screen, so they are 9:16. Landscape formats around 16:9 belong to video thumbnails and to the link previews that appear when a page is shared. Profile pictures are square but displayed as circles.
Uploading the wrong shape does not fail; it gets cropped, and the crop is decided by an algorithm rather than by you. A landscape photograph posted where a portrait is expected is trimmed to the centre, which is precisely where a carefully composed image is least likely to survive intact — text near an edge disappears, a subject placed off-centre is cut in half, and a logo in a corner vanishes. Sizing deliberately means you choose what stays.
The other reason to size correctly is quality. Platforms re-encode and downscale whatever you give them, and an image that arrives at unexpected dimensions goes through more processing than one that matches. Supplying the right shape at a generous resolution — roughly twice the displayed size, to look sharp on high-density screens — gives the platform less to do and produces a visibly cleaner result.
Safe zones, and working from one master
Full-screen formats have a complication that catches people out repeatedly: the interface sits on top of the image. On a story, the profile name and timestamp occupy the top of the screen and the reply bar and action buttons occupy the bottom, covering a band at each end that varies between devices. Anything important placed there — a headline, a call to action, a logo — is partly hidden for a substantial share of viewers. Keeping essential content within the middle portion of the frame, roughly the central 80%, avoids it entirely.
Profile pictures have the same issue in a different form. They are supplied as squares and displayed as circles, so the corners are always cut. A logo that fills its square to the edges loses parts of itself on every platform that renders it round.
The efficient way to work is from a single generous master rather than editing each size separately. Produce or choose an image large enough to crop in every direction, compose it with the subject central and clear space around the edges, and then generate each placement from it. That way a change to the artwork is made once, and the composition survives every crop because it was never dependent on the edges. Keep the master at full resolution and treat every exported size as disposable.
