Print more, waste less

N-up printing — several pages reduced onto one sheet — is the standard trick for cutting paper use. Students print lecture slides four to a page for revision; teachers hand out two-up worksheets; developers and lawyers print long references at two pages per sheet because they are still perfectly readable at half size. A 120-page deck becomes 30 sheets.

Doing this as a PDF conversion, rather than in a printer dialog, has real advantages: the layout is identical on every printer and OS, you can share the compact version with others, and you can check exactly how it will look before committing paper to it. Printer-dialog N-up settings are notoriously inconsistent across drivers.

For readability, 2-up works for almost any document, and 4-up suits slides and large-print material. Combine with the Grayscale tool to also save color ink, or delete unneeded pages first so you only print what you will actually read.
