What your photos are actually carrying

Every photograph a phone or camera produces has an invisible companion record attached to the image data. EXIF is the main one, written automatically at the moment of capture, and it is far more detailed than most people expect: the exact date and time to the second, the make and model of the device, the lens, the shutter speed, aperture and ISO, whether the flash fired, the orientation the camera was held at, and — if location services were enabled — the GPS coordinates of where you were standing.

Those coordinates are the part that matters. They are precise to a few metres, which is enough to identify a specific house, a school entrance, or an office. A photograph of a bicycle for sale, a picture of a pet posted to a forum, a snapshot of a child in a garden — each can carry the address it was taken at, and nothing on screen indicates this. Reading it back takes seconds in any metadata viewer.

There are other blocks alongside EXIF. IPTC and XMP hold captions, keywords, copyright statements, and editing history, and software adds its own traces — a picture edited and exported may record which application processed it and when. None of this is visible in the picture, and all of it travels with the file.

When to strip it, and when to keep it

The rule of thumb is straightforward: strip metadata whenever a photograph is going somewhere you do not control. Marketplace listings, forums, dating profiles, public social posts, images attached to an email to someone you do not know, and anything published on a website all qualify. Large social platforms usually strip EXIF on upload as a side effect of re-encoding, but that is a convenience rather than a guarantee, and it does nothing for a file sent directly by email, message, or cloud link — which is precisely how photographs are most often shared in full.

There are good reasons to keep it too, and stripping indiscriminately loses something real. Photographers rely on embedded copyright and contact fields to assert authorship, and on the capture settings to learn from their own work. Photo libraries sort and search by date and location, so scrubbing an archive can destroy the organisation of years of pictures. Metadata is also what lets a photo be used as evidence of when and where something happened.

The practical compromise is to keep your originals intact and strip only the copies you distribute. That way the archive retains its dates, locations, and authorship, while nothing you publish carries more than the picture itself. If you want authorship without exposure, edit the metadata rather than removing it — keep the copyright and contact fields, and clear the location.
