What fits in 50 KB
50 KB is enough for a clear head-and-shoulders photo at around 400 × 500 pixels, which is more than most forms display. A photo straight from a phone camera is often 3 to 5 MB, so it needs to shrink by about 99 percent.
To get there, the tool tries the highest JPG quality that fits first. Only if quality alone can't reach 50 KB does it reduce the pixel dimensions, in small steps, so the photo stays as sharp as the limit allows.
Getting a photo accepted
Forms reject photos for more than size. Use a plain light background, face the camera, and crop so your head fills most of the frame. If the form lists exact pixel dimensions, resize to them first, then compress.
If the portal says the file is still too large, check whether it counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes rather than 1,024. Setting the limit a little lower, such as 48 KB, avoids that edge case.
